Here is my new DSL modem in operation. A BritePort 8120.

Since I have very old style DSL still, I do not have to use PPPoE and I actually have one static IP address. The BritePort is totally configurable via a web interface and also has a console mode.

In moving over to this modem, I ran into a problem right away. I could not get DSL sync. After a little investigation, of my DSL wiring (out of the splitter) it seems the Alcatel 1000 accepts the DSL on the second pair of the RJ11, not the primary pair like every other DSL modem I have ever seen. I guess that was a first gen thing which they quickly ditched to allow for "home self install kits."

I re-wired the jack that goes to the DSL modem to use the first pair and DSL sync came up on the BritePort. It came up on "G.dmt" line speed with a 1.5mbit/385k line speed. Nice.

Setting up a new DSL modem isn't just a plug and play affair once DSL gets sync. First you need to find your ATM PVC -- and let me tell you, the lame tech support folks won't have this information. (I didn't even bother.)

In addition, you need to know a bunch of other parameters as well to get it all working.

The BritePort has a auto-provision mode which scans for the PVC and sets up a WAN profile for the DSL. I tried to use this mode several times but it never found any PVC's.

I was just testing a Cisco 2811 with a ADSL WIC at work and found that on our modern AT&T DSL there, it uses a PVC of 0/35 with "aal5snap" encapsulation and then PPPoE on top of that.

I tried similar settings in the BritePort but used RFC1483-Bridged modem since I do not need to use PPPoE with my static -- but I couldn't get out.

I rebooted the modem once more and tried to auto-provision and wow, it found a PVC! Auto-provision set it up with a PVC of 8/35, VCMUX encapsulation and RFC1483-Routed mode. I was happy, but this still wasn't working. Damn.

Well, I tried changing settings -- after a few things, I figured the PVC was really 8/35, but the other settings were not right.

In the end, I got it -- PVC of 8/35, LLC/SNAP encapsulation and RFC1483-Bridge -- basically exactly what I first tried. I just didn't have the PVC correct.

Now I'm up and working with a new (and modern) DSL modem in bridge mode that has a full interface, console and SNMP ablities. Plus now I know the PVC info and other settings, I can change to a new modem at any time.
